Buwa Salvi-A Legend:
Shankar rao popularly know as Buwa Salvi ,the peerless pioneer of kabaddi,is no more.Yet is spirit lives on,and lives on for ever.He is in the heart of every Kabaddi player in our country.He is revered and worshiped by each and every person who knew him intimately.His total devotion,unflinching loyalty and limitless love for the game of the Indian soil earned him niche in the heart of every sports lover.He promoted the game,first converted it from different kants of every region into kabaddi-kabaddi to achieve nationwide uniformity in the game,and then took it beyond the borders of India,The game is now played in most of the Asian countries and was included for the first time in Bejing Asiad in 1992 where Buwa Salvi was present at the sole representative of the Indian Olympic Organisation.
Shankarrao Salvi always cherished a dream to see Kabaddi played at the Olympic Games.Though the dream remains unfulfilled during the lifetime of this great man,the day is not far-off when his cherished dream would be translated into reality.
Contribution To The Field Of Sports:
1950
Actively participated in the formation of Ad Hoc Committee for Indian Kabaddi Federation.
1952
Strenuous efforts were made to convert Hututu into Kabaddi in Maharashtra.
1953
The Game of Kabaddi adopted Kabaddi as Kant through-out the country.
1953
Women's Kabaddi was introduced in the National Kabaddi Championship after Maharashtra Women's Kabaddi team presented the game in the National Kabaddi Championship,thanks to special efforts of Mr.Salvi in the formation of Women's Kabaddi team.
1955
With his great efforts Women's National Kabaddi Championship was officially started.
1957
In Moscow Youth Festival well-known Kabaddi players from Mumbai Mr.Datta Malap was selected
to represent Kabaddi with Mr.Salvi;s Efforts.
1958
Started Ashvinikumar Bhoir Gold Cup Kabaddi Championship at Sx.Xaviers Ground in Mumbai.
1963
Started Dadoba Gawand Cup All India Kabaddi Championship for women.
1968
Smt.Indira Gandhi,Prime Minister of India ,paid goodwill visit men and women kabaddi players.The
PM was deeply impressed by the discipline and enthusiasm of players and complimented Mr.Salvi for that.
1969-1970
National Kabaddi Championship was organized in Mumbai to mark the Silver Jubilee of Maharashtra State Kabaddi Association .At the invitation of Mr.Salvi,President of India,Mr.V.V .Giri graced the gala ceremony by opening the Championship.
1972
Under the President of Mr.Mohan Dharia,Mr.Salvi revived Amature Kabaddi Association of India.
1973
Mr.Salvi organized Ashvinikumar Bhoir Gold Cup and Daboda Gawand Cup National Championship at Baramati,Dist.Pune ,Maharashtra.
1975
Mr.Salvi Hon'ble Mr.Sharad Pawar to lend the Kabaddi organization with a view to taking the game of Kabaddi beyond the borders of Maharashtra /Delhi and India.
1978
Promoting the game of Kabaddi ,popularizing it in Asian countries like Nepal,Bhutan,Singapore,Pakistan,Thailand and Japan,Mr.Salvi founded the Asian Amature Kabaddi Federation.
1979
Organized Kabaddi test matches of Bangladesh Kabaddi team in Mumbai,Hyderabad,Bhilai,Delhi and Kolhapur.
1980
Organised first Asian Kabaddi Championship tournament.
1981
Organised second Asian Kabaddi Championship Tournament-at Dhaka in Bangladesh.
1982
Organised National Kabaddi Championship Tournament at Sangli,Maharashtra.
1982
With the efforts of Mr.Salvi,exhibition matches were played at Delhi Asiad.
1990
At the Beijing Asiad ,Kabaddi was introduced for the first time and India won the only Gold Medal in Kabaddi there. Mr.Salvi attended the Asian Games as the Indian Observer representing Indian Olympic Association.
1993
Maharashtra Government Honored Mr.Salvi by conferring on him Shiv Chhatrapati Award for the year 1992-1993.
1994
With the sanction of Maharashtra State Kabaddi Association,Mr.Salvi organized first International Kabaddi tournament with the co-operation of Hindmata Seva Mandal,Mumbai
1995
Elected as Chairman of Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India.
1996
Elected as General Secretary of the Maharashtra State Kabaddi Association.
1997
During the tenure of Mr.Manohar Joshi ,Mr.Salvi organized first Shivshani All India Kabaddi Championship Tournament of the Government costing Rs.25 Lakhs
1999
Organised Second Shiv Chatrapati Cup Tournament at Latur.
2000
Organised first international Coach and Referee camp at Pune in which 150 referees from Nepal,Sri Lanka,Malaysia participated.
